What do I know about Anime? Hmmm. Well for one thing it comes from a tiny island across the sea with a really strange taste in key chains, a populace that consumes raw fish, beer vending machines, invented Nintendo, and internet speeds we can only dream about here in the US. The main characters tend to use lots of hair gel and dye, and talking animals are the norm…I think. Basically all I know about Anime comes from reading Mega Tokyo.
So, without further ado:
Jen’s Top 10 Reason’s I am Not Not Interested in Anime
10. The stories– I’ve always been a big fan of a good story. Especially when they involve demons talking umbrella’s, people in school uniforms, and underage kids saving the universe on a daily basis.

Story time with Yuki
9. Not having the ? face around my geek friends– Let’s be honest, I’m a geek. But only a pho-geek. I know the lingo. I spend more time with my computer than with real live human beings. And I’ve been known to stay up all night reading the latest “insert popular novel here.” But I’m basically clueless when it comes to Anime.

I have no idea what you’re talking about…
8. angst!- It’s what makes Soap Operas nearly watchable. And from what I’ve seen it’s a prime component of Anime. Bring it on! Unrequited love is my favorite. If the two main love interests get hooked up before the 5th season it’s totally not worth it…

7.The hair– Gravity defying. Blue. Awesome.

This dude has spiky blue hair. Did you notice?
6.The fights– It’s all about the action. The more physically impossible the better. Explosions, lighting, give me the works!

Epic battle.
5.The Weapons– It’s a well known fact that in fiction the weapons better only have the barest compatibility with reality in order to be super bad-***. Combining weapon types= Awesome.

sword+gun+fire= pure awesome
4. The dude who did Howl’s Moving Castle– That Hayao Miyazaki dude? Hands down the best classic myth film-maker I’ve come accross. So far 95.9% of my entire exposure to Anime has been through this dude.

I Love Love Love this movie.
3. The Artwork– All my life I’ve been “drawn” to comics. It use to be superhero comics. But sometime around my first year of college (a while ago) I discovered the Anime style of caricature and fell in love. The lines were so clean and neat! The colors so bright! There is just something about the style that rocks my socks off.

2. Cons– I went to one, AX2009, and I was a fish out of water. I don’t like to be a fish out of water. I like to swim. For years I’ve been observing cons from afar through means of randomly coming across pictures of them in my internet travels which brings me to my last and biggest reason I want to get better acquainted with the world of Anime.

Ooh a crowd!
1. Cosplay– Costumes, replica weapons, dressing up like my favorite character on days other than Halloween and not being completely ostracized? Bingo. You’ve got me. What can I say? I’ve got a flair for the dramatic. By this time next year I want to be a proud member of the, “Who are you supposed to be? Really? That’s awesome!” Club. You know in the good way.
Dude! I’m in this pic!
The only question is…Where do I start?
I’m open to suggestions. In the mean time, I believe I’ll watch Cowboy Bebop.
